Happy 2013 everyone!
I also want to thank Donna Gray for sharing her family's experience with kombucha, and I have posted her story below. Any comments are welcome. And if you have a kombucha story to share, please do not hesitate to e-mail it to me as well!
Kombucha Experience, written by Donna Gray
I grew up in Bangkok from age 2-9 (1970-1977) my food intake (diet) was predominantly rice, vegies, eggs, some fruit and meat. Lots of soy/tofu but no dairy (unavailable) and wheat products were rare. I felt very healthy and never went to the doctors.
When I arrived in Australia (unbeknown to us at the time) I suffered lots of allergies; IBS, bloatedness, bad sinus, thrush etc.
I found out by default when I was age 35 that, by not eating wheat & dairy all my allergies had ceased. I was helping my husband do the Atkins diet (high protein, no/low carb) for 3 wks. Soon after this we went onto Peter D'Adamo (and his father's) blood type diet which is pretty much Wheat and Dairy free for us "O+" blood types and essentially back to my former diet in Thailand. We've consistently maintained the blood type diet now since 2004 and have been in excellent health (age 44) according to my yearly blood tests.
3 months ago my hubby started brewing Kombucha (trial & error). We only drink about 80-150 mls once daily.
I'm sure its caused my sinus, which is so bad its unbearable and lots of nose bleeds too. My hubby got thrush, but despite our sexual activities, I did NOT get thrush (I think this is as a result of the Kombucha). Back in the wheat eating days I got thrush bad all the time and serious awful sinus. When I looked up the Internet I found 3 items with references to Kombucha causing or exacerbating sinus.
I've stopped drinking Kombucha a week ago and my sinus is clearing up, but I am disappointed as I like the taste and believe in the potential health benefits of Komucha. My hubby and our two kids (4 & 12) will continue drinking it.
Follow Up 1.5 Weeks Later
The kids and my husband continue to enjoy its benefits. My 12 year old daughter's psoriasis/eczma is clearing up pretty well. She has had it all her life and for years we applied steroid cream (Elomet) to contain it when inflamed (we tried not to use Elomet too much for obvious reasons). My husband read a few weeks ago about weight control with Kombucha and he drinks Kombucha before a meal and in the past few weeks has lost 3 kgs. With the 4 year old, she just thinks Kombucha is a fizzy drink treat. We only give her about 30 mls daily or 2nd day. We try not to over do it, as my hubby's uncle used to go crazy with his Kombucha and ended up with either a kidney or liver problem. We think he was making it too potent and overdosing on Kombucha.
